Industry overview

Demand is booming. Most of the supply is independent.

Domestic travel drives Indian tourism. Domestic tourist visits rose 17.5% to about 2,948 million in 2024, led by Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, while foreign tourist visits reached 20.9 million and foreign exchange earnings about US$35 billion. Travel and tourism supports around 84.6 million jobs across hotels, transport, food service and experiences.

Branded hotels are expanding fast (over 19,000 rooms opened in 2025 alone and the five-year pipeline exceeds 1.14 lakh rooms) but they remain a small share of total supply. Most travellers still stay in independent hotels, guest houses and homestays. For these owners, pricing, online distribution, service standards and access to finance decide whether a property thrives or merely survives.

Current landscape

Travel is growing, margins need managing.

Room rates and revenue per room rose strongly in 2025. Independent properties that price and distribute well can capture the same gains.

Average daily rate (ADR)₹8,624
Revenue per available room (RevPAR)₹5,522

Average daily rate rose 8.6% and revenue per available room 10.8% over the previous year.
